When looking into a cultivated society, it is difficult to notice the signs and symptoms of someone who is stressed and emotionally abused due to stigma and discrimination. These two negative impacts differ from each other; stigma is a negative stereotype and discrimination is the impact and result from the stereotype. Both are enigmatic.

HOW TO

Recognize someone being affected by discrimination and stigma

What is Stigma and Discrimination?

“Stigma is a perceived negative attribute that causes someone to devalue or think less of the whole person,” says Kristalyn Salters-Pedneault, Ph.D. Stigma is the devalue and disappointment someone receives because of their mental illness. Discrimination is similar except they receive this because of their actions, appearance, who they love, etc.

What to look for:

Intimidation

“Unlawful act of intentionally coercing or frightening someone to do (or to not do) something against their will,” (business dictionary).

Someone who is being discriminated for who they present themselves as can witness or become a victim of intimidation.

When you notice these changes in environment and take action, you help people that are unwilling to stand up for themselves.

Lack of social interaction

When kids, adults, are faced with discrimination and or astigmatism they refuse to interact or attend events where a large group or small group of people will be present. They are scared they will be judged by others or intimidated in a social-outing.

When you take action to say hello, become friends, and help the person being faced with these issues, you aid them socially, and emotionally.

Depressed or anxiety state

Discrimination and astigmatism may cause depression and or anxiety due to the abuse the person receives. This causes difficulties in daily lives, socially and by oneself. Human functions become difficult, and work or school becomes a task.

When you take a risk to help someone being effected by someone else, this decreases the risks of depression and anxiety.

Self harm

To compensate for pain victims feel, it is common they will resort to self harm. Most of the time these victims will hide their scars from others; refusing to show or talk about them.

If you see someone with scars, or marks, tell an adult immediately or talk to the suicide hotline on how you can help. When a victim is taking their life dangerously in their hands, they are willing to cause death upon themselves. Do not be afraid to stand up for said victim.

Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are caused when someone is uncomfortable about their weight, they are bullied, emotionally, or physically abused about their weight, and or they believe they are obese. These disorders cause you to lose weight unhealthily.

If you believe someone is losing weight unhealthily, contact an adult near you, or contact the victims parents. Teenagers are prone to eating disorders, and it is common to be called 'fat', 'overweight', 'chubby', etc.

If you believe someone near you is being discriminated or stigmatised, contact an adult immediately if you have seen these signs.
