Looking into a cultivated society, people are given certain roles and or characteristics to live by. When these people’s actions and wellbeing are inconsistent with what they are given, it causes an impact, emotional and physical. I chose this theme and topic because there is stigma towards acting and being yourself in most circumstances. When someone is bias towards a certain topic, it is difficult to be open when others are candid with the opposing options. Choosing to be sincere with oneself when others will be unwelcome to the ideas takes courage, even through the pain.

For my Fiction Piece, I created a Narrative Text based on two people in a relationship. I wrote it in the sense where the reader assumes the relationship is between an abused boy and girl, but the reader will soon question why the couple is supposedly abused. In the end, it confirms that the relationship is between two boys, which concludes why they were being mentally and physically bullied by others; unaccepted by society.

For my visual/multimedia piece, I created a body art piece whom my sister, Brynn MacAusland, helped me out with immensely. We are looked down upon by our appearance, and judged on how we show ourselves to the public. I demonstrate a couple of the ways a human being could present themselves that would cause name-calling and labels.

For my Non-Fiction piece, I created an Advice Column called “Astyrus Advice”. An advice column perfectly shows the help some people go to to help relieve the stress they go through from others, and or looking for ideas to help with themselves. In this column, I wrote about a girl, coming out as a lesbian, being judged at home and at school. The advice, from Astyrus Advice, give her ideas to aid the situation and be a better self.

For my Informational Research Piece, I created a How-To, a way to recognize discrimination and stigma in your community. It can affect anyone, and with this How-to, it will be easier to recognize the symptoms, actions, and reactions to someone being effected.

Throughout this piece, no matter what, if you are affected by discrimination, never forget to be yourself. You do you best.

Stigma and discrimination is difficult to understand if you do not do your research; not easy to comprehend on your first try. They are two different things, and I learned that quite fast. This was my first issue, as I wrote the pieces like they carried the same definition.

This project was difficult because it truly showed whether your strong points were your writing techniques, your art pieces, and or your creativity with them all. Evidently, my weakest choice was my ‘How-to’, however, my strongest was my Narrative Poem and my Body Art piece. With my strong and weak points in this website, I learned how to strengthen my old techniques, and I comprehended new ones along the way.

This project taught me I do not need others to tell me who to be; I am my own person, and if they judge me for being who I am, they are probably jealous. I work towards my own future, and my appearance does not define my skeleton or soul. I hope to touch on this topic again in the future.

I learned multiple new things, and sharpened my old knowledge due to our last multimedia project and the lessons we went over in class. I wanted to change my theme statement; further into the project, it became more difficult to write about due to it showing a repetition of words. I discovered that this project truly strengthens your knowledge on the topic you chose, and the different forms it will appear in. In stories you read and learn how others feel, in art pieces you experience the conflict with your eyes, and in informational texts such as advice columns you feel what others have felt and need help with.

When you write and create stories, advice columns, and or creative art on a subject, you experience it on hand and how it affects others. I have never experienced extreme stigma or discrimination to how I presented myself in social places, but I do have experience in how it happens and how to aid someone in need; this project simply strengthened me more. To me, it was an amazing experience to gain more knowledge on the subjects of discrimination and stigma in society.
