Standing Stigma

Throughout society we are faced with discrimination and stigma when we choose to wear certain clothes, talk a certain way, or express ourselves. In my art piece, I created ribs to depict skinny kids being told they were anorexic or obese for their size. I placed dots along her upper arm, specifically making one of them pink, to show the people that are unique. I showed a tattoo on her other arm to describe the weird looks people get from tattooing and piercing their body. I painted shorts on her lower body to describe the pain kids go through with their clothes, it is one of the first things people judge at first glance. I made a rainbow heart, bleeding on her chest to show the emotional and physical pain someone can go through to love someone, no matter the gender or sex. In the end, I drew an ‘X’ over her mouth because when you are discriminated or have stigma over your body and life choices, few people fight for what they believe in; they have no say.
